Door Step Collectors - Warning.

On Monday 27th July, one of our members in Harrowgate Drive was approached by a woman collecting for a 'Childrens Charity'.
No details of the charity were given and the woman wanted the householders bank details to set up a direct debit facility. The householder refused and the woman left. Efforts were later made to trace this woman, but unfortunately failed.
Our advice remains the same:- NEVER give out personal banking details to anyone who calls or phones.

£50 Reward for Reporting Graffiti Vandals

Birstall Parish Council has launched a six month trial of a scheme to offer rewards leading to the arrest and conviction of persons causing graffiti.

The terms are as follows:

• The Council will pay £50 for information leading to the arrest and subsequent conviction of persons causing graffiti.
• The incident must have taken place in the Parish of Birstall.
• Where more than one report of the same incident is received, only the first report received will be eligible for payment.
• Information received will be passed to the Police but to no other parties. This information may include the name and address of the informant.
• Payment is conditional upon conviction and only one payment will be made per offender.
• The scheme will initially run for six months and may be modified or withdrawn at any time.
• Calls may be made in person, by e-mail or by telephone to the Parish Council Office.

"The Government" calls for your bank details - SCAM!

We have been advised by a member of a scam where a telephone call is received with the caller purporting to be from the 'Government'.

They then continue to ask personal questions relating to financial matters of the person they are calling and try to get personal banking details from them.

They target, it appears, the elderly and vulnerable people.

NEVER give out your personal banking details.

Fortunately, in the incident reported to us the person who was targeted had the presence of mind to ask them to phone back and "speak to my daughter after 5pm" (which, of course, they never did)

Distraction burglaries

There have been three distraction burglaries in the Charnwood LPU area, over the last 30 days.

The reasons given for gaining access were “the Water Board”, a relative of a neighbour wanting pen and paper and wanting to purchase a household item.

The Water Board has also been used in Loughborough to gain access and as usual they ask for the occupier to turn on the water, which gives them time to suss out the accommodation and to steal money, credit cards etc.

The best advice is to keep anyone out of your home that you do not know and who does not have a good reason for entering your home. Sometimes it is a matter of confidence or when they call, the occupant is dealing with something else, and not thinking about distraction burglars.

Please mention to any of the vulnerable people in your community that they are within their rights to keep anyone out of their home anyone that they do not know, or anyone they do know and are unsure of.

Burglaries.

During periods of hot weather it is normal to have more windows than usual open. Three recent burglaries in Birstal have involved entry through open windows and/or unlocked doors at night.

Please remember to check all windows and doors when going to bed at night or when leaving the house during the day.

Burglary - Copeland Road

Police are appealing for witnesses following the report of a burglary at a property in Copeland Road Birstall.
The incident happened between 12am and 7am on Tuesday June 30, when the victim woke to find items from a downstairs room had been taken.
Entry had been gained by the suspect through a back window to the property. They then made their escape in the victims silver BMW, 320ISE, vehicle registration, FP51 WX U.
Also taken during the burglary was a black LG plasma television, a Nintendo Wii and games, a diamond engagement ring and a wedding ring, 2 Sony Ericsson mobile phones, a laptop, a digital camera and a camcorder.

PC Phil Porter, the officer investigating the incident, said: “There have been a lot of expensive items taken from the property and we are keen to get these back to their owners.

“If you were in the Copeland Road area on the morning of June 30 and can remember seeing anything suspicious then we want to hear from you.

“It may be that you have been approached by someone trying to sell you any of the items mentioned or that you have seen the vehicle since the incident. Any information you have, no matter how insignificant it may seem, it could help us with our investigation.”
