Telephone Scam – Warning

We know of at least two incidents of scam telephone calls in this area in the last few days, there may be others.

The calls are purported to be from a police officer and refer to an investigation of a fraud.  They advise you to transfer money to a new bank account.  They will suggest that you ring 999 and ask for them to prove that the call is genuine.

IT IS A SCAM.

When you end the call to them, they will keep the line open so that regardless of the number you dial it will be them who answer.  When making a call like this, always make sure that you can hear the dialling tone before you dial a number.

We know of one elderly victim who has had a very large amount of money stolen in this way.

If you receive a call of this nature, report it immediately to the police.  Do not transfer any money.

Charity Bag Collections – Identity

We have received a number of reports about donation bags being left out for collection by a charity and being pick up by other non-identified collectors.

Genuine charity collectors will always carry identity with them and will be happy to show it if challenged and very often use marked vehicles.  Anyone who leaves a bag out for collection is entitled to challenge a collector if they are in any way suspicious.

Unauthorised collection of Charity Bags, apart from depriving the charity of their income, is actually theft.
