TV Aerials – scam.

We have received a warning about ‘cold callers’ who appear to target elderly persons and persuade them to have unnecessary and very expensive work carried out to their TV aerials.  It is not known at present whether the Birstall and Wanlip area has been targeted.

Our advice is as always, if you require any work to be done to your home, ask your friends and neighbours to recommend a local tradesman and to obtain more than one quotation for the cost.

Please keep an eye on any elderly or vulnerable neighbours and report any suspicions immediately to the police.

Burglary – Park Road

On Saturday 13th September between 5.00pm and 11.00pm, a house on Park Road ( close to the railway bridge ) was burgled.  Entry was gained by an upstairs window and various electrical items were taken along with a pillow case ( believed to put the items in ).

Attempted Break-in by cutting window.

An attempted break-in occurred on Friday at a house on Loughborough Road.  The method of entry was by trying to cut a large hole ( about 18 inches diameter ) in a rear double glazed window, presumably with a glass cutter.  Fortunately the attempt failed.

This is not a common method used to gain entry and the police would be very keen to know if there has been any other incidents of this type.  As no entry was gained, it would be easy to assume that ( for instance ) a bird had flown into the window causing it to break and therefore not reporting it as an attempted break-in.

If you know of any similar incidents that have not yet been reported, please do so by dialling 101 the police non-emergency number.

Rogue Trader Warning

We have had a recent report of cold callers offering to do drive and roofing work. They provide glossy leaflets and have a van with a company name painted on it.

However, residents who have employed them report shoddy work and demands for payment far in excess of the price quoted initially. When challenged, they have become very intimidating and threatening, forcing people to pay up despite their better judgement.

Our advice is never to engage workers who contact you unannounced. Experience shows that the work is rarely value for money and, because you cannot contact them, you have little redress.

If you want work done, get several quotes from reputable tradesmen whom you have chosen yourself.
