Arrests & Charges Good News - but “Holiday Burglaries” Cause Concern
Along with the arrests detailed below, a man from Leicester has been charged in connection with a burglary in Birstall in which a car was also stolen. Other similar offences in this area are also being attributed to this person.
The man on the black mountain bike mentioned in last month’s newsletter has been arrested and remanded into custody. A lengthy sentence is expected.
Also, arrests for public order offences have been made in the Wanlip Lane area.
However, police have expressed concern over holiday burglaries: Most recent burglaries have taken place while the victims have been away on holiday. >Click here for advice on protecting your property while you’re away. (http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/docs2/hs_away.html)
Man appears in court for Birstall robbery; adjourned for psychiatric report
A 33-year-old man who broke his wrist while trying to rob a woman in Birstall on June 18 this year has appeared in court.
Matthew George Frape of Mottisford Road, Abbey Rise, Leicester pleaded guilty to attempting to rob the victim of her handbag and had his case adjourned for the preparation of a psychiatric report. Frape was remanded into custody until November 14.
Leicester Crown Court heard that Frape had previously been sentenced to four years' imprisonment for carrying out a similar crime, when he was thwarted by two elderly women he was trying to rob.It was not long after his release that he carried out the Birstall offence.
The prosecution did not open the facts of the case involving his latest victim, although he was said to have broken his wrist during the robbery attempt and appeared in the dock with his arm in a bandage.David Herbert, defending, said that drink was a key factor in both incidents.
Judge Philip Head told him: "There's a worrying similarity to the previous matter for which you were sentenced."There are substantial grounds for fearing you might commit another such serious offence.'
'The court heard that under recently-introduced laws, if his case was considered serious enough by the judge, Frape could qualify for a life sentence to protect the public.
