Bogus NHW telephone calls.
We have been informed of a number of incidents recently where people have received telephone calls purporting to come from NHW officers. The caller has asked for details of any alarm system on the property and where any valuables are kept.
We can assure you that NHW officers would never make such calls and are therefore certain that these calls are bogus and made by criminals trying their luck.
If you received such a call, end it immediately, try to obtain the number the call was made from by dialing 1471 and report all details to the police on (0116) 2222222.
Robbery on Church Hill
Officers in Birstall are appealing for witnesses after a 27-year-old man was robbed on Church Hill. The incident happened shortly before 10pm on Sunday February 10 as the man was walking along the lane in the direction of Birstall Road.He heard two people running behind him and when he turned was grabbed by a man who was carrying a Stanley knife. He made the victim hand over his wallet and mobile phone before the two men both ran off up Church Hill towards Front Street. The man with the knife is described as 5'5" tall and fat build. He wore a checked woollen hat over his head with slits cut in the eye holes. The second man was around 5'7" tall, slim build with a black beanie hat pulled over his head.
Detective Kim Potter who is investigating the incident said: "We're keen to speak to anyone who witnessed this incident or who saw two men matching the descriptions in the area last Sunday night. The victim walked past the Chinese restaurant on Whiles Way and also the Plough pub. Perhaps you also visited these places on Sunday night. Did you see the suspects? Perhaps you were on Front Street and remember seeing two people running from the scene? If so please get in touch."

Cowboy Contractors.
Please be wary of any unsolicited callers.
One of our members, on the Gates Estate, has received an unsolicited visit from a salesman purporting to be from a roofing company. When he was told that they did not require any roofing repairs, the subject was changed to essential damp proofing work and then eventually to central heating repairs.
The emphasis at all times was to persuade the elderly occupier to give the man a cash deposit for the work to be done.
Our advice is to always obtain a number of quotations for any work that you require to be done and if you do not know of any suitable firms or tradesmen, then to ask your friends and neighbours for recommendations.
