Distraction Burglaries - Warning
The following warning has been received from the police at Market Harborough. These people do travel around.
A distraction burglary took place yesterday in the Northants area.
An elderly lady opened her door to a man selling dusters. She bought something and went to get her purse to pay, leaving her door open. The man followed her into the house and stole some money.
The man was described as being around 40 yrs of age, small and plump with thinning hair and glasses.
Please don't automatically open the door to anyone you don't know.
Speak through a window and if you're in any way unsure they are genuine, then don't open the door.
If you have opened the door, always shut it if you need to go away to get anything while the caller is still there.
If they are genuine they won't be offended.
Check the identity of unexpected callers claiming to be from utility companies (gas/water/electric) by phoning the appropriate number in the phone book. If you are at all concerned call the Police immediately.
Call the Leicestershire Police switchboard on 0116 222 2222 or 999 in an emergency.
Alternatively if you wish to report any information anonymously call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
